Why Are Your Fingers Cold?
Published in Hardcover by Herald Pr (October, 1992)
Average review score:

More than a story to be listened toThis book proved to be highly entertaining for my 2 grandchildren recently. The simple text and delightful pictures provided lots of opportunities for additional interaction with them.
Great gift book about families and loveThis beautifully illustrated children's book makes a lovely gift for babyshowers, young families, and even grandparents! Why Are Your Fingers Cold? reveals ways families show their love for each other through simple actions and affirmations. Cold hands are for holding, scrapes are for kissing, cinnamon rolls are for sharing. The book follows 2 families (one white and one African-American) through 4 seasons of growth and interaction. The question and answer dialogue can facilitate preschoolers as they learn to read and can reassure children of how parents demonstrate their love for them through action. This is a tender reminder that loving others gives life meaning.

Wuthering Heights, Fourth Edition (Norton Critical Editions)

A ghost story with the feel of ancient tragedyI read this book aloud to my wife 23 years ago. At the time, I was working as an apprentice at a winery on the Rhine River. There was an old medeival castle across the river from our room. It was the perfect setting, as we two were the only English speaking people in the town. I think now is the right time to review the book, because I can only recall the feelings left behind by this powerful work of literature. Most of the plot and many of the characters have been long forgotten, leaving only the residue of strong emotion. I have read many works of powerful fiction by the world's great authors since then. But not one of them affected me emotionally the way this extraordinary tale did. I remember one gray German morning finishing the chapter where Heathcliff digs up the body of his beloved Catherine because he has gone mad in his desire to hold her close once more. And then off to the Altenkirch Schwanenkellerei I went. I spent the rest of the day working quietly in the cellars of the winery, deep inside the mountain with mold hanging all about, and brooding over the maniacal behavior of these highly romantic, insane characters. I've never been able to shake the feeling entirely. There is something so entirely timeless about this work, as though it were a piece of ancient literature, old far beyond the 1840s setting, something so utterly classical and piercingly primordial, it's as though you already had the genesis of this material in your DNA and it only required this story to bring it back to life within you. You recognize the spell it weaves because it speaks to the humanity in you so clearly, it is as though you have been secretly drugged. The English language has rarely been utilized as well as it has here, and I dare say you would need to go back to Shakespeare to find its parallel. Romanticism reached its high water mark with this novel. Ms. Brontë has now become immortal because of her creation, and in the Pantheon of world literaure, she stands among the Titans. If you are a native speaker of the English language, you can hardly consider yourself educated if you have not read this astounding novel of romantic love and uncontrollable passion.
wuthering heights editionsRather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:
1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation,
excellent introduction.
2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.
3. Norton's Fourth Edition: OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact.
4. Hoeveler(New Riverside) and Heywood (broadview) are worse choices: Riverside annotation (I suppose inherited from the former edition) isn't very good, and Heywood is too much idiosyncratic and controversial.

Your Magic Garden: A Guide To Discovering Your Life Work
Published in Hardcover by Sky Om Publishing (01 May, 1998)
Average review score:

Guide for today's lifestyleI really enjoyed this book. I actually have given 2 as gifts and the recievers were thrilled with it. In today's world it is easy to focus on one aspect of life, especially work. This book has a down to Earth, realistic approach to remind you that there is more to life than work and that to be healthy you need to focus on all aspects of your life. This book is beautifully illustrated. If you want a conversation starter it makes a great coffee table book!
Beautiful illustrations, great way to find the magic in lifeYour Magic Garden is about the difference between "having a life" and "life having us." It shows work as only one example of how a part of our garden can grown out of control. By understanding the relationship between the six trees of life, we realize we don't have to choose one over another. Your Magic Garden takes the complex demands of today's culture and makes them simple: simple words, simple pictures, simple concepts. This is a fantastic book for young adults (high school to adulthood)! When combining Who You Are with What You Do you will discover balance and wellness in your life!

Active Living Every Day: 20 Weeks to Lifelong Vitality
Published in Paperback by Human Kinetics (T) (April, 2001)
Average review score:

The only exercise book you'll ever need.I don't normally buy how-to books. But a friend recommended this book, and now I'm recommending it to everyone I know. Everyone talks about how important it is to get exercise. But what if you're not the sort of person who has the time or wants to go to a gym? That's why this book is so helpful. It's a week by week guide to adding physical activity to your day to day life. It talks about the obstacles that get in the way, and how to get around them. It's full of stories of people who have faced the same problems and have found ways around them to become more physically active. For me one of the most helpful parts was learning how to measure how much exercise I get and then shoot for more. This is a really useful and inspiring book for anyone who knows they need to get more exercise but doesn't know how.

American Government in Comparative Perspective (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Longman (15 June, 1999)
Average review score:

Global Approach to American GovernmentI especially liked this book because it gives an unusual perspective -- that of seeing American Government in the context of the international political system, that is, it allows the reader to compare our government with that of other countries. This is very helpful, as it illustrates vividly the similarities and differences between our government and others around the world. An excellent, clear book about how our government is set up, and how it actually runs.

Anxiously Engaged
Published in Hardcover by Deseret Book Company (January, 1990)

a great addition to your libraryThis book is a great addition to any other Paul H. Dunn books you might have in your library. It's humorous and motivating...it makes you want to be "anxiously engaged" in doing good as the scriptures command. The stories are great to use in talks and in family lessons on helping others or being a better person. A great tribute to his life. Definately one to have if you love Dunn's books! I gave out copies for Christmas gifts. It's worth the time reading.
